Way of Life

The following is our rule of life.  It is a set of theological foundations and the way of life that naturally flows from them.  This rule emerged out of three years of life in community.  It represents a way of life that we hope to embody, although the reality is that we do so imperfectly.  Thankfully, God gives us grace for the journey.

Allelon Rule of Life

I acknowledge that everything in this world is from God, and to God, and for God to the glory of his name.
AND
I vow to disown the notion of ownership, sharing everything with everyone.  I will live with open-handed generosity towards the world, and I will discern along with my community partners how we will collectively steward all our resources in a way that bears witness to Christ’s coming kingdom, our love for each other, and God’s trustworthy provision.

I acknowledge that I was not promised this day, and that my time is a gift from the Lord.
AND
I vow to be thankfully present in this place at all times, and graciously interruptible for the sake of laying down my life for my friends and enemies.

I acknowledge that creation is a gift, and that God seeks to redeem all people and things in Christ.
AND
I vow to be creative with my stewardship, finding new ways to honor the gift of this earth in a manner that is redemptive and life-giving for myself, my neighbors -near and far-, and the earth we all share.

I acknowledge that the bride belongs to Christ and that the Father creates her as he determines.
AND
I vow to receive and embrace the community that God creates in this place regardless of a person’s race, age, position, class, background, or ability.  Furthermore, as just one part of the body, I will joyfully celebrate varied expressions of God’s kingdom wherever I encounter them.

I acknowledge that my Father God made me, that I am his child, that he knows my deepest desires, and that he desires to lead me to full life in his kingdom.
AND
I vow to seek God’s vision for my life, seeking first the Kingdom, and to listen attentively to God’s voice speaking through communal discernment.

I acknowledge that God saves us and refines us through community.
AND
I vow to humbly submit to my brothers and sisters in the Allelon community and to aid them in the pursuit of their callings in any way that I can.

I acknowledge that reconciliation is at the heart of God’s work in the world and that the Lamb of God showed us the only path to true reconciliation by walking the way of the cross.
AND
When conflict arises, I vow to urgently seek reconciliation along the lines of Philippians 2:1-11 and Matthew 18, confessing my own shortcomings and being quick to forgive.

I acknowledge that the kingdom does not depend on me or my power and that God is all in all.
AND
I vow to develop the disciplines of prayer and Sabbath as a constant rhythm of life.

I confess that Jesus of Nazareth, being in very nature God,
            made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness, and being born in a manger
did not content for earthly status
humbled himself, befriending sinners, becoming obedient to death
died for his friends and enemies and was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.
AND
I freely give my life to this community and vow to uphold its covenant as the power of the Holy Spirit enables me, having been called and welcomed and remaining here until called away, sent by God and my sisters and brothers, and empowered by every blessing of heaven.
